Senator Robert Menendez, Democrat of New Jersey, second from left, sits with his children Alicia and Rob and Gov. Alicia and Rob Menendez have surely enjoyed the privileges of being children of a powerful political leader. After a former ally pleaded guilty and began cooperating with prosecutors, Senator Menendez and Nadine Menendez were additionally charged with obstructing justice. Alicia Menendez, 40, has been forced to address the charges against her father — and calls for his resignation — on live television. “When your close loved one is at the center of a political scandal,” she said, “it’s in your obit too.”

One America News, a right-wing cable news network, on Monday retracted a report claiming that Donald J. Trump’s former fixer had been the person who actually had an affair with the porn star whose claims of a sexual relationship with Mr. Trump are key to his criminal trial. The retraction came after the fixer, Michael D. Cohen, hired a leading defamation lawyer to address the false report, which was posted on the network’s website on March 27. The lawyer, Justin Nelson, had represented Dominion Voting Systems in a suit against Fox News that cost that network $787.5 million to settle. Mr. Nelson worked with Mr. Cohen’s longtime lawyer, Danya Perry, in what was a remarkably quick about-face by OAN. There are no monetary damages, but the story is being removed from the website “and all social media,” the network said in a statement on Monday.

Manhattan’s Criminal Courts Building, at 100 Centre Street, is short on charm: circled in scaffolding, lit like an aging cafeteria and, in recent months, neighbor to a colossal pile of rubble, the remains of the Manhattan Detention Complex, which is being demolished. Yet come Monday, it will be the pulsing center of a swirling mass of security measures, and likely headaches, as the first criminal trial of Donald J. Trump kicks off on its 15th floor. Court and law enforcement personnel have been tight-lipped about the exact steps they are taking, but a court lawyer said at a hearing this week that preparations had been underway for months. They will have plenty to contend with. Right-wing supporters of the former president have already announced plans to protest near the courthouse on Monday as jury selection begins, and cable news networks have promised wall-to-wall coverage of the case.

In an unusual move, the five major broadcast and cable news networks have prepared a joint open letter that urges President Biden and former President Donald J. Trump to participate in televised debates ahead of Election Day, according to two people with direct knowledge of their plans. The letter — endorsed by ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC and Fox News — thrusts into public view a question that has swirled within media and political circles: whether the presidential debates, one of the nation’s last remaining mass civic rituals in a polarized age, will occur this year at all. “We, the undersigned national news organizations, urge the presumptive presidential nominees to publicly commit to participating in general election debates before November’s election,” the letter reads, according to a draft version obtained by The New York Times. The letter is not yet final, and the networks are also seeking endorsements from other leading national news organizations, including newspapers.

The service will launch this fall and cater to sports fans who don't subscribe to the traditional cable bundle. One person associated with the launch of the new venture told CNBC the platform will be "a monster" and massively disrupt cable TV. Cable TV has been relegated to an add-on that helps keep people subscribing to high-speed internet. The cable bundle has largely survived because it still contains exclusive live news and sports. Previously, the only way for cord cutters to get ESPN outside the cable bundle would have been that coming service.

New York CNN —CNN announced Monday that it will overhaul its entire slate of morning programming, charting a new course under new chief executive Mark Thompson as the cable news network works to improve its lackluster ratings. The network said that it will revamp its flagship morning offering, “CNN This Morning,” currently hosted by Poppy Harlow and Phil Mattingly. “CNN This Morning,” which has aired from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. Prior to joining CNN in 2021, Hunt anchored mornings on MSNBC and played a key role on “Morning Joe,” the network’s politics-focused rival program that has long been a force in morning ratings. CNN said that it is in talks with Harlow and Mattingly concerning new roles at the network.

ABC and NBC's streaming services carried a part of Trump live, then left and corrected some of what Trump said. Live coverage of events is the go-to move for cable networks, which thrive on a sense of urgency. “Saturday Night Live” opened its show last week with a spoof of one of those news conferences. Fox News' Sean Hannity and Jesse Watters both did segments on rivals' decisions not to show Trump's Iowa speech in full. On MSNBC Wednesday, Trump's speech received far more attention on “Morning Joe” than it had the night before.

The Warner Bros Discovery (WBD.O) chief executive will have to more than double the value of the media company if he wants to collect a lavish $200 million compensation package awarded when Discovery agreed to merge with Warner Media in 2021. The news sent shares plunging 19%, the largest one-day drop since Discovery merged with Warner Media. Its current value is over $18 billion when applying Bernstein’s multiple of 8 times EBITDA. At the end of September, the company had net leverage – after deducting $2.4 billion cash – of 4.2 times EBITDA. Shares of Warner Bros Discovery fell 19% on that day.

In the days before the Israel-Hamas war, the battle in Ukraine amounted to about eight percent of CNN’s television coverage. After the attacks, CNN —the cable news network that provided the most Ukraine coverage — fell to under one percent. The noted drop in Ukraine war coverage from the press, given the fresh violence in the Middle East, is not completely surprising. As Kolbe told me, “Putin’s media campaign to paint Ukraine as divided, corrupt, and a puppet of the U.S. and NATO, is a central part” of his strategy. The lack of press attention makes that all the more easier.

"The question is: does Lachlan Murdoch want to have a positive relationship with former President Donald Trump? Fox News did not immediately respond to a request for comment about political coverage under Lachlan Murdoch. CNN —The cable bundle is losing its biggest edge over the streaming competition: live sports. For years, live sports and news have been the cornerstone of the immutable cable bundle. Max is set to launch a live news channel next week, with the birth of CNN Max, the first cable news network to offer a 24/7 live streaming news service. With live news and sports now making their way to streaming, piece by piece, the Jenga puzzle of the cable bundle has started to destabilize. Once ESPN is available directly to consumers, the decades-long grip of the traditional cable bundle will surely fade considerably.

NEW YORK (AP) — The departure of Rupert Murdoch as the leader of Fox’s parent company and his News Corp. media holdings after decades at the helm is unlikely to have as much of an impact on conservative media overall as it would have a decade ago. “I think if Rupert Murdoch had stepped down in 2000 it would have had a much greater impact," said Howard Polskin, whose website The Righting.com monitors conservative media. "The conservative media landscape is just much more diverse now.”Fox News' website had nearly 74.8 million viewers in July 2023, while the No. Conservative media personalities such as Tucker Carlson, who was ousted by Fox in April, Daily Wire podcaster Ben Shapiro, and talk show host and podcaster Megyn Kelly, also a former Fox host, are increasingly influential as well. CNN —DirecTV and Nexstar announced Monday that they had largely resolved a bitter carriage dispute that had left millions of the satellite carrier’s subscribers unable to access local television giant Nexstar’s large array of channels. The deal to end the blackout, which began in July and stretched for more than 75 days, comes one week after Disney and Charter also agreed to resolve a dispute that resulted in ABC-owned stations and ESPN being yanked from the cable provider’s lineup. While most of Nexstar’s stations will be covered under the new multi-year agreement, DirecTV said 27 stations controlled by Nexstar, but owned by another company, will not fall under the umbrella. DirecTV chief executive Bill Morrow alluded to the trend in a note to customers on Monday. “Unfortunately, over the past decade-plus access to your programming has become a battleground for networks and stations to try to drive up higher rates,” Morrow said.

CNN is moving a step closer to its digital future. The cable news network will start a 24-hour streaming channel on Max beginning on Sept. 27, Warner Bros. Discovery, which is CNN’s parent company and also owns Max, said on Thursday. A Fox News chyron called Biden a "wannabe dictator " who had "his political rival arrested." "Fox News Tonight" carried clips of Trump's speech after he was arrested and arraigned on Tuesday, alongside footage of Biden speaking at the White House, the latter with no audio. The onscreen text remained in place for around 15 seconds, continuing into the next show "Hannity," Mediaite reported. The Fox News onscreen text about Biden came despite Trump once praising China's President Xi Jinping for becoming "president for life," while joking that he should try to do the same thing. Fox News was the only major cable news network to carry Trump's speech live on Tuesday night, according to The Guardian.

After the discovery of one particularly incendiary text from Mr. Carlson, the Fox Corporation board decided to begin an internal investigation into his conduct. Mr. Carlson’s cancellation — he is still an employee of Fox unless the network decides to let him out of his contract — has upended Fox’s lucrative and popular prime-time lineup. Roughly one-third of its prime-time audience has tuned out since Mr. Carlson was taken off the air. Mr. Carlson’s lawyers have argued that Fox News breached its contract with Mr. Carlson first, in part by failing to prevent his private messages from being disclosed.
